Postdoc In Genetics Of Arthropod Vector - Pathogen Interactions, Zürich (kreis 11)
Switzerland, Zürich, Zürich,
Geändert February 1, 2024

Vector Entomology Unit

at the

Institute of Parasitology

focuses on research on vectorial capacity, behaviour and bionomics of arthropod vectors (mosquitoes, biting midges, ticks). Our lab acts as the Swiss National Centre for Vector Entomology (NZVE), as appointed by the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office. In particular, the NZVE is involved in the early recognition of vector-borne epizootics and zoonoses and provides expertise for the identification of arthropod vectors in Switzerland.
One of our interests is vector attraction to infected hosts. We have demonstrated that vector-borne pathogens can change the host microhabitat preference of the mosquito vector. Based on this observation, we aim to characterize the pathogen (epi)genetic and host immunological basis determinants of vector behavior and the interactions involved.

Postdoc in genetics of arthropod vector - pathogen interactions

Your responsibilities
The successful candidate will be involved in vector competence studies performed under BSL 3 safety standards and contribute to the National Centre's tasks. The candidate is expected to assist in teaching and therefore German is a strong asset, and professional English essential.
Your profile
Applicants should have a doctorate in biology, with a focus on molecular biology and genetics, with experience in bioinformatics and statistical data analysis, genetic engineering and a background in infectious diseases (ideally: parasitology). Background in vector biology is preferred but not essential. Candidates with a veterinary degree (veterinary dissertation and Ph D) are strongly encouraged to apply. For a veterinarian, a residency of the European Veterinary Parasitology College (EVPC) in the alternative training program is an option.
What we offer
We offer a stimulating environment for entomology and parasitology research, with an outstanding research infrastructure (including spacious insect rearing facilities, access to BSL3). The University of Zurich and ETH Zurich form a nucleus for research and innovation in Zurich and beyond.

The salary will be competitive and in accordance with the University's guidelines. The initial contract will be for one year with possible extension.
Further information
Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to

Prof. Niels Verhulst.
